This new space will improve overall health, teach coping skills and manage behaviors by providing structured indoor and outdoor exercise opportunities. New exercise and recreational equipment will help lower anxiety, build relationships, teach skills and improve mood.

According to John Franzen, MD (above, left), medical director of Behavioral Health services at Methodist Fremont Health, a strong and innovative recreational therapy program is an important part of helping patients discover new behavior modification techniques that will last beyond their time in the facility.

“This new program, equipment and space will benefit all inpatient mental health patients,” Dr. Franzen said. “These individuals need a safe place for exercise and activities, and to enhance and incorporate new coping skills into their daily routine – creating healthy habits and necessary skills that they can continue after discharge, hopefully setting them on a positive path for their future.”

The Fremont Health Foundation provided the dollars from the Behavioral Health Services Fund that was created as a part of the 2019 Garden Party Event.

“These and other projects supported by this fund are designed to help provide education, outreach and program enhancements for inpatient and outpatient mental health services,” said Shawn Shanahan, director of the Fremont Health Foundation.

“The foundation is thrilled to see these funds put to such great use.”
